About Guide to Deafness / Hard of Hearing
Description: Hello - I am Jamie Berke, born deaf in the middle of the Rubella Epidemic of the Sixties. I grew up oral, and learned sign language later on. My roommate Robert Goodwin is also deaf, and also grew up oral and learned sign later. Experience: I have been an About guide since 1997, and my other "deaf experience" includes running the Closed Captioning Web and Deaf Adoption News Service websites and associated discussion lists. I was also active in the early "Caption Action" effort to increase closed captioning on videotapes. At present, I am working in web development at a job in the "hearing world." Education: I attended NTID at RIT in the early Eighties, and transferred to Gallaudet University, graduating from Gallaudet in 1987. In 1996, I received a second degree from Gallaudet. Robert and I met at NTID.
